MOUNTAIN VILLAGES

The villages on the slopes of Mount Dikaos are some of the most picturesque on the island being largely traditional with old stone built houses. They are in great contrast to the more accepted view of shops, hotels, tavernas and nightlife which Kos tends to project. It doesn't take a great deal of effort to get up there and better yet, put on a pair of walking shoes and go rambling.

It is possible to walk down from Zia into some of the unspoilt, traditional village of Assomatos, Evangelistria and Lagoudi. You can also take the car of course but you will see much more on foot.

Many of the houses are in a state of disrepair but, slowly, cottages are being restored and people are once more living in these villages in the mountains. The views from up here are, of course, fantastic and you must take your cameras with you. There are plenty of opportunities to take fantastic photo's, not only of the local area, but also of the stunning views across to the neighbouring islands and the Turkish coast.

It is also incredibly quiet up here, sometimes without even the sound of a car in the distance.

The cross at the church of Christ right at the top of the mountain.

Zia itself has some very good tavernas and of course the view of sunset is second to none and every evening the wall as you go into the village is lined with people taking photos. It also affords quite a few shopping opportunites with local and handmade products on sale in some of the shops.

Sunsets which are never the same twice.

Make the effort- you will be glad you did!
